Whats the difference between a Certified and Uncertified Coach

What's the Difference Between a Certified and Uncertified Pickleball Coach? As pickleball continues to explode in popularity, more players are stepping into coaching. That's fantastic for the sport—but it also raises an important question. Does certification really matter? After spending years educating coaches across Australia and internationally, I've realised the answer isn't simply about having a certificate. It's about understanding people.Early in my coaching journey, I had the opportunity to work alongside former professional tennis players and elite basketball coaches. Many were phenomenal athletes. Their ability was incredible. But some struggled to coach beginners. Why?Because what came naturally to them didn't come naturally to everyone else.I watched coaches become frustrated when students couldn't perform a drill they thought was simple."It was so easy for me. Why can't they just do it?"The answer was obvious once I stepped back.Elite athletes see the game differently. They move faster. They process information quicker. They've repeated movements thousands of times until they become instinctive. Many coach the way they were coached. The problem is, their coach was often working with a freak athlete—not the everyday person who has just picked up a pickleball paddle. That was one of the biggest lessons I've learned.Being a great player doesn't automatically make you a great coach.Great coaching isn't about showing people what you can do.It's about understanding the person standing in front of you and helping them discover what they're capable of.Another moment that shaped my coaching philosophy came when I had the privilege of attending a session with AFL coaching legend David Parkin. He said something I've never forgotten.«"You're not just coaching the athlete. You're coaching the person."»Those words completely changed the way I viewed coaching.Today, I believe our responsibility goes far beyond teaching serves, volleys or third-shot drops. We build confidence. We help people solve problems. We create environments where people feel safe to learn, make mistakes and improve. If we do our job well, we're not just developing better pickleball players. We're helping develop better people. To me, that's the real difference between a certified and an uncertified coach. It isn't the certificate hanging on the wall. It's the commitment to keep learning. The willingness to listen before speaking. The ability to adapt your coaching to every individual. And the humility to always put the player before your own ego.Because great coaching has never been about creating better athletes. It's about making a positive difference in people's lives through sport.
